were we spot on?

May 27, 2008

two days ago overheard quote of the day alluded to the outcomes of the Eurovision contest and its repercussions on politics.

For those of you that have been spared the 4 hour horror music contest, the background fact is this: Russia won the contest. now, let me abstract from a quality judgement on this result: it would be difficult to rank the partecipating songs. how difficult? just have a look at the lyrics of the second classified (Greece), rumoured to be the next pulitzer-winning:

My secret combination
It ’s a mystery for you
Use your imagination
I ‘m not easy but I ‘m true

My secret combination
Boy you have to try it hard
To win a destination
In the center of my heart

obviously, Eurovision is the most humiliating and embarassing song contest that i have seen on tv. and i have grown up with SanRemo. many sensible people around Europe seem to think alike me, but say for those who enjoy it, say for those who have a taste for the loathing, the Eurovision is dutifully financed and broadcast by most national European tvs.

so it went this year as well, but (fortunately? unfortunately?) UK took the shame to arrive last with 14 points, more than 200 points less than Russia. God forbid that! how come that the nation that gave the Rolling Stones and the Beatles to the world arrived LAST in a musi competiton!

Imagine the ourburst of irritation that must have almost unperceivably shaken Baronet’s Terry Wogan mustaches, while he had to powerlessly watch the slow and public defeat of his nation. Depite the fact that he must have been quite used to it, being this the 35th time that he was commenting the competition for the English audience, Russia’s victory became the last drop. wasted by decades of mockeries, the far-sighted baronnet implictly claimed the come-back of nothing less than the Cold War!

You have to say that this is no longer a music contest.

I have to decide whether I want to do this again. Western European participants have to decide whether they want to to take part from here on in, because their prospects are poor.

(T. Wogan)

now, now, i can see that it burns. this is why Italy elegantly dropped off the competition long ago. but, baronet Wogan, wouldn’t is be easier to call in cause the affinity of tastes within the easter block rather than remote signals of a renewed cold war? i am also sure that your fine mind can come up with some good reasons to be happy not to have won.

overheard quote of the day:

“but, it’s good that they won, this will make them contempt and keep them away from the political scene. you know, they were used to be such a big power, with this they are going to be happy for the next 5 years.”

OG on Russia winning the Eurovision contest.
